The Independence Expedition® is an interactive program, providing education on what you may expect as you embark on your orthopedic journey. This program will review the “do’s and don’ts” of the 24 hours before surgery, and will explain what you will experience on the day of surgery. A tour of the orthopedic nursing unit will be provided to familiarize you with your hospital surroundings. A therapist will review the pre-operative exercise program to enhance your recovery, and provide tips that will help protect your new total joint. You will have the ability to view different types of equipment which will facilitate your road to recovery and independence.
You will embark on the journey to independence by preparing for your surgery. This portion of the journey has been designed to identify your health status and needs, and to start the processes necessary for a well-coordinated experience. These preparations for surgery may consist of blood draws, an electrocardiogram, a chest x-ray, a urine sample and other diagnostic testing as required by your individual health status. Additional testing may be required for some participants.
A representative of our admitting team will be present to pre-register you, confirm financial information, and review your advanced directives. The goal of the Independence Expedition® is to ensure you are physically ready for surgery, and to enhance your journey to independence.
